The archives of the Bavarian State (Germany) have preserved records (e.g. charters, files, maps) generated by the government respectively administration of Bavaria and its predecessors since the introduction of writing (the oldest charter dates from 777). They can be used in the reading rooms of the nine Bavarian state archives.
Our pages are available only in German as the consultation of the records and of the finding aid will not be possible without knowing German.
Please note that in Germany, as a rule, any genealogical research for the time after 1876 should begin with the records kept by the local authorities of a person's residence, but for the time before 1876 it should begin with the registers for baptisms, marriages and deaths kept by the ecclesiastic archives. Research at the state archives makes sense only with exact information gained from these sources, which means that only by using both sources of research there will be a satisfying result.
